It's an honest question.

But don't worry, Jeff. Some Christians do a good enough all by themselves by exposing themselves to certain amount ridicule.

The Roman Catholic church absolutely still teaches that masturbation is a sin, because sexual pleasure is something that is only to be shared between husband and wife. Nothing to do with Onan, but the church teaches masturbation is sinful outside of marriage and causes people to become too focused on their own sexuality rather than sharing it with their partner.

It is considered a sin, and you are expected to confess it.

Of course this is bad enough, but couple this with the requirement to abstain from all sexual contact before marriage (depending on how fundamentalist you are, that can even include kissing), you wind up with two young people who have expectations that because they did the right thing the wedding night will be the best night of their lives, and those expectations are often shattered pretty brutally.

Couldn't have said this better. It is also mine and my wife's experience. Masturbation re-wires the bodies sexual stimulation triggers, especially for a man - our honeymoon didn't go too well either.

Celibate teenagers have no way out apart from guilt and shame unless they are coached through it better, which is what I intend to do with my kids. It's why I also believe that the older/middle eastern practice of marrying young is beneficial - when one is most sexually wired is when one should be going at it.

Whichever way you look at it, the carnal reward of sex - good feelings in the flesh/body, has been wired into us by God - hey, if you wanna populate a planet! - we have no option except to stumble and fall if unmarried, so I'm not going to tell my kids it is sin. I'm going to say "don't worry" and give them a great big hug. I'm going to model abiding in Christ for them as well, because that is the best way of letting self (read God) control displace the flesh nature and of getting things in the right perspective. They will still have to get things in perspective for their own lives, so these are the skills that should be taught or better, modelled.

I'd imagine masturbation would be viewed as a "gateway sin" which can lead to greater sin, such as lust, pornography, prostitution, and out of wedlock births. Idle hands are the devils workshop, if it feels good, STOP!

Greater sins, and lesser sins. I'd forgotten about those categorisations, and the means by which people are inspired to choose between the two.

I'd say it's a necessity. At least for guys.

It's like shaving.

Would BREATHING then be a gateway to sin? After all, only the living can sin...

The Independent Fundamental Baptist church still preaches against it. It's a part of purity, in which single men should abstain from pornography and masturbation until marriage.
