As a rule of thumb I follow these words by Emmet Fox, btw, a Chistian.

to dwell on any thought that is not positive, constructive,
optimistic, kind.''

My bold.

Very noble. Isn't this why EVERY spiritual teaching that gave enlightened ones to humanity, at its backbone, has one basic accomplishment to be achieved - STOP THINKING?
A thought is a thought. No one knows if it is truly positive or negative, as both are two sides of same coin. Constructive or destructive, as they are same. Optimistic or pessimistic, as they are same. Kind or brutal, as they are same. I could keep building antonyms like this for long time, as everything is duality. And everything is one in two and two in one.
So any thinking is bondage as thinking is done by ego, the body mind. The enlightened mind does not think. It is in Consciousness.

On second thought...to pursue righteousness, assuming you feel you are not?

I would do one thing...Seek the Kingdom of God first...then all else will follow...

People often think they need to be good to experience God.
When really once one experiences God, they naturally become good or
as you say, righteous.

If you think you're going to become righteous by good living you're mistaken. There is no one who is of pure heart.
And yet, Matthew tells us--

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Guess this is just another lie??

I forgot, many evangelicals do not believe the Beatitudes are scripture...words to live by, right?

I think that, just like Solomon, they require perfection for the term to apply at all.
