Spiritual abortion or spiritual birthing are facilitated by what?
Revelation 2 shows two types of children that people carry. It shows the overcomers who are raised sons of Christ and they are virgins before God and they give birth to sons in Revelation 14.
Revelation also shows another type of spiritual child, all the children of Jezebel are killed because they were still children and all the churches will know that God rules and reigns from the heart.
This is the bema judgment that occurs and it only happens to the congregation of Christ and it is shown in Ezekiel 9 where people lay dead on 666 because of their abominations.
The only way to raise a child in the milk of the word so that he can eat meat in due seasons in to give him the meat of the seasons. He learns the ways of the temple because he is the temple, he learns the ways of the comings and goings of his master but the servant who does not know the comings and goings of their own master in their own temple will die at the Bema judgment and the whole world will laugh as one because it will be evident that the majority of Christians died.
But the righteous are left behind along with an unbelieving world, and those left behind are indwelled with a double portion of spirit that is twice as powerful as what the first disciples received on Pentecost, they receive double at Sukkot after the Bema judgment.

To be born again in the spirit and water of God people need to repent to God through Jesus and try to love God and forgive the church of Christ and others who they have ought ....... People may giving an offering and try to stop sinning to the identity of Jesus to get Jesus attention ...... being born of water is water baptism where people openly get water baptized with repentance and devotion the name of Father Son Jesus and Holy spirit in the sight of God ............ See this process can take a few days to months if less Christians are in attendance praying .......... Baptized in the Holy Spirit were there is more evidence and power of God can come which is expected for Jesus converts come with prayer and believing with humilities of a child of God

I have got to be honest and say that I know the words, but absolutely none of that meant anything to me. Out of curiosity, is it just that I haven't learned the backgrounds or does it not make sense to anyone else, either?

In facing their threshold or brink, marching throught the "GATES" out of captivity in Egypt, Israel has to make a leap of faith. Had they not taken bold, daring action, stepping out in faith, God could not have saved them.
Bold action is always motivated by faith of some kind. Faith-filled people of God take bold action, which opens a "GATE" and releases spiritual power.
Paul opened up a "GATE" in Ephesus when he boldly preached the gospel in the city. Not only were people changed but the socioeconomic system of the city was transformed as well. The city transformed (see Acts 19).
Bold action opens up a "GATE" of spiritual power and blessing from God. The heavens over an area are opened in a new way. It is at the "GATES" as someone steps onto the threshold that faith and perseverance are tested. It is at the threshold where either spiritual abortion or spiritual birthing occurs.

It's highly symbolic and steeped in esoteric meaning. I have enough experience with some of the metaphors (bema judgment, etc) to kind of see where he's going with it. It's sort of free associating with religious metaphors.
Your exasperation (and mine) is similar to one of Jesus' disciples complaints that he was always speaking in figures and metaphors and couldn't just make things plain. But the thing about religious concepts is that they must inherently be vague and somewhat fungible in meaning so that they have that timeless, deep, unctuous feel to them and can act as a template for a variety of religious beliefs that are derived from them. Unbelievers like to decry the variation in how the different denominations / faiths interpret scripture and the different interpretational systems (theological approaches) that can be made to work with the very same passages. But as with many things, the greatest weakness is also the greatest strength because you can have believers who disagree violently (sometimes literally so) about what the scriptures mean but they all revere the scriptures as inspired and holy just the same. And the scriptures, if they don't get too specific, can "speak" to modern times better, and appear to "prophesy" current events.
And as Tz points out, this triply indirect symbolism has an appeal all its own. The appearance of richness and depth, the discovery of perceived patterns, makes holy writ seem alive and vital and actively inspired to those who want to see such things in it.
