You came into this world exactly the same way everyone else did. Why do you feel that your religious belief that you come up with in your head somehow will determine what happens to you after you die and will be different than someone with a different belief?

What's interesting is that they will deny they feel special, but when pressed will usually point out that they are god's chosen people. And that those who aren't in their special group are going to hell.
The question I have never heard them answer successfully is, if god created everyone, why would he favor certain tribes...and that is what their thinking is -- tribal.
I have often remembered how when I was a kid, we would "clubs" in our neighborhood. And it made us feel special to be in one club as opposed to another club. Na na na na na na!
Perhaps they should wear funny hats like the Shriners so we could identify them more easily.
I think the OP is painting with too wide a brush. Sure, you've got the fundies who think they are their god-thing's special pets and everyone else is scheduled for eternal toasting. But most religious people I know are normal, humble folks who don't regard themselves as better than non-believers, or Other-believers.

Being normal doesn't matter. By default they are special because they believe they are going somewhere different than non-believers. What makes them so special that they are going to heaven over a non-believer?

I think you're partially right. The OP and I do paint a pretty broad brush.
I am not one of those people who, out in everyday life, run around talking about religion, but neither do I shy away from it when it does become a topic of conversation. And when I have pressed christians about the hell-thing for non-believers there are two most common answers I have gotten: either "Well, we don't have to talk about that" (and what do you think that response means?), or they admit that they do actually believe that.
So while we shouldn't paint with that too broad brush, neither should we paint with the finest artist's brush, either.

Christians believe that only those that accept Jesus Christ in their life will receive eternal life. Anyone else will not receive eternal life. Why does this simple belief give them the special treatment after death?
