That fits as well. Religion is partly about the world and partly about the self. The world needs to be organized, before contemplation of the self can begin. We live, work, and die in the world, and we live for eternity in the Self. They are both parts of the same, but parts.
It looks like it fits but that analysis is not supported by etymonline or any other source I know of. But it was a fun attempt at analyzing it.

Res Legio. Power over the people. Or, control over the people. Over minds. BTW, I do not find it to be "fun perspective". It is outright down to Earth as, in case of Christianity, it was indeed developed, based on Saul's strategy, as crowd control tool for Emperor Constantine. Keeping in mind that Saul was Roman Secret Service agent. Had his life saved several times by them.

Of course, the topic of controlling others is not fun so that was my mistake. My focus was on word analysis.

Religio.
Root is RE. or REs.
Res means to rule. Res populi is rule of the people. Res publicum, or re-public - means same. Same root has REX, or KING, ruler. Rex Dei is Holy King.
Guess, what ligio mean?
It is changed LEGIO, or crowd.
Capiche?
RES LEGIO - rule the crowd.
Valete.
One of the words you use as an example is republic. According to etymonline, the re- is an ablated form of res- which has a denotation of "in reference to".
The base <reg> is more closely related to <rex>. Words in the <reg> family include regal, regicide, regular, regulate, register, and region.
