Maybe all of the above. Herd mentality is another. But, while I hate to admit this because it then makes it so difficult to pinpoint what is actually going on, I do believe that there ARE those who GENUINELY believe that they are speaking in a 'heavenly language'. They're not speaking in any 'angelic language', of course,* but they sincerely believe that they are.

There is this human condition where 'gibberish' CAN spontaneously occur, particularly when someone is in an aroused state of emotional ecstasy. When this occurs, the person temporarily loses control of reality and slips into a condition that, I'm sure, has a clinical name. I began googling some online medical science journals for further information, but I soon lost interest and put this on hold.

*Unless angels DO speak 'gibberish'.

What languages?
This is the key question in this entire discussion. If we aren't talking about an actual language, then we're talking about something else other than "speaking in tongues."

I speak and write in plain English and most do not understand what I share. I have even had many say that I am being cryptic. The scriptures are spiritually discerned.

There are many scriptures I have read and then at a proper time the understanding dawned on me, and it was like seeing it new and knowing the growing connection. Which then becomes a word in season.

When I look at the Garden of Eden, it is a banquet of untouched food that has yet to be tasted and already prepared. The serpent was no host in sharing food. I look to the Lord of hosts in sharing food. Just as the jar of manna that did not spoil is contained in the Ark of the Covenant.

I am sure there are plenty of monks and nuns all doing their bit in caves and monestries across the world, yet they are not interacting with the outside world at all.

I am not understanding any of that scientific jargon in LearnMe's post. Can anyone explain in language a non-scientist can understand please?
Extensive meditation can cause changes in what goes on between the ears for which there is no proof to suggest it's anything other than an altered mental state caused by the mediation, and/or not having anything to do with anything outside from what's going on between the ears.

Although Buddhist, I am not a follower of what I'll call 'true meditation'. I don't want my mind to become a blank slate. And some of our wooists here on the forum don't need that type of meditation...their minds are already a blank slate!
