Miss S, I think we're talking about the "purpose" of the critters, can you answer that question instead of steering the wheel??
I suppose the purpose of insects is the same as all creatures. To survive and reproduce. We may think they are nasty, but we kill and eat animals don't we? Most blood sucking insects do not kill their host.
It is believed that fleas evolved from flies because of the similarity of the larva. There is evidence that insects have evolutionary ties to crustaceans
