Why don't these people take care of the properties they own? Why do they continually rent to people who ruin their properties and neighborhoods they inhabit? Why don't they perform background checks?

If you are one of these landlords or know one like them, I'd love an answer. Deadbeat landlords are a major cause of ruin in our city.

Let me see if I have this straight. You are blaming landlords who have tenants that cause damage and not the tenants that cause the damage?

Landlords get to choose their own tenants right?

And you really think a deadbeat landlord reads this or similar forums? There are good and bad tenants as much as there are good and bad landlords and the answer you seek can't be found!

I'm blaming landlords who habitually rent to these people. I would *think* it would go without saying that the tenants are the ones causing the issues, hence my question posed to the landlords who rent to them. All.the.time.

Unfortunately neither background checks nor references are foolproof.

Of course not. But when every single tenant you rent to causes issues in your property and the surrounding neighborhood it becomes quite obvious the LL isn't doing background checks. Or they have incredibly bad luck and should get out of the game already.

Maybe you should become a LL and help fix up your city by making better decisions.

Yes, I did read your post. But those of us who know or have known bad landlords can only guess. This forum is replete with bad landlord stories which might give you some ideas.

Or, if you live in such an area, move.
