I believe the $1600 referred to what the OP is paying in rent. As in, "For $1600 a month, I expect to have a working dishwasher"

Ask if you can buy and install one and take it with you when you move.

Glad I bought mine in January before the shortages got even worse.

The complex has a legitimate excuse with the supply chain issues. I would be surprised if they didn't laugh at your request to reduce the rent until the dishwasher is replaced. Apartments are in high demand too so unfortunately you don't have much leverage here.

Ah, yes. You did a much better job of sorting out that word salad than I.

They would have to store the old one and put it back when they moved.

I would expect the apartment to store/dispose of it. If they agree it needs a new dw, I would assume they would dispose of old one.

Only if the complex bought snd replaced the unit would they trash it; they’re under no obligation to store a broken unit.

If tenant buys a new unit and plans on taking when they move, they need to put the old unit back or the complex could take the replacement cost out their deposit.

A dishwasher is an amenity, it’s not required by law.

Just Leave as is. Buy a Portable model you can re-sell or take with you when you move. https://www.amazon.com/portable-dish...ble+dishwasher

Question is two could we just go buy a new one on our own? Also, should we ask for $50 to $100 off our rent till a new dishwasher is put in?

Thanks!
It’s very difficult to get dishwashers and other appliances ever since Covid. It’s also very difficult to find rentals so I’d be happy I had one and not complain about a minor inconvenience. Sure it’s a bummer you have to hand wash your dishes but it’s akin to making your own ice cubes if your automatic ice maker breaks. A mouse turd in the big scheme of things.

Based on the OP, apt feels dw is not repairable, and needs to be replaced, but can't get one in due to supply problems. So they agree the old one is going to be trashed. So it makes sense to ask if they will remove it now, tenant buys one and puts in, then takes it with when he leaves. The apt would be getting extra time to replace dw when he moves. All arranged w/property mgr in writing of course.
