I love my folding bike. It is great for seniors - it's not a racing type bike but a transportation bike and for leisure. Not only does it fold compactly to fit in the back seat of a car without taking the wheels off, it is lightweight (it could be carried up to an apartment), it is very easy to step into (very low middle bar), and its 10 gears are easy to change. With my mobility issue it's the only kind of bike I can use. Google the Dahon brand, just one of many.

You might look into electric assist bikes. They are like a regular bicycle but when you need some zip, like on a hill you can kick in the silent motor.

Everyone has different preferences when it comes to bikes. I love bicycles, am 63 y.o. and own four, and ride them all. My most comfortable bike, is the Giant Suede cruiser, it is 7 speed with slightly forward crank and big cushy saddle, very easy, comfortable and safe to ride.

I have a vintage Schwinn Traveler 3-speed - this one seems harder on my legs and knees, but I still love it.

I own an older Sedona DX 24 speed comfort hybrid - this one is more complex and tricky to ride and designed for roads or trails. It does NOT have a forward crank, it is traditional bicycle geometry.

Lastly, I do have a small Schwinn folder which I hardly ever ride, I received it as a present for if I wanted to take it with me in my little convertible to a park or beach, etc.

One should really go to a bike shop and ride a few and get their recommendations before you purchase to see what feels comfortable to YOU. And definitely buy from a bike shop, do not make the mistake of purchasing from Walmart, etc. It might be a little cheaper, but in the long run it is not worth it.

Bike riding is one of the most fun exercises you can do - I am an addict, started riding about 10 years ago and never looked back!

Gypsy, take this Schwinn to your local bike shop to have a 32 tooth front chain ring installed in place of the factory chain ring for a very small cost. This will move the gearing ratios down to a range were pedaling in town a sweet, sweet dream! Your legs/knees will love you!!

I have double knee replacements and this is how I made all my bikes easy, easy to ride.
