Following up on Clark Park's witch hazel remedy...
What did your mother and grandmother (great-great?) use for minor problems or routine care? Not to dispense any medical advice, just to share safe old-fashioned kitchen (or store) remedies. As always, check with the doc re: interactions, esp on herbs or anything taken internally.
Sprain or strain...to reduce the swelling make a poultice from one cup of corn meal, cooked in enough vinegar (no water) to make a mush. Spread on a cotton cloth, place on the swollen area for awhile, repeat. It helped a few years back when I sprained my wrist.
I seem to recall a black ointment that was rubbed on and a cloth wrapped around it. Can't remember what the problem was. Or part of the body it was used on.

We used Porters Liniment. It had camphor, sassafras and myrrh in it and was safe for humans and animals. It worked really well on burns, sun burns, chapped skin and rashes but you could smell someone who was wearing it coming for miles!
For stomach upsets my grandmother would add 1/4 tsp baking soda and 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar to a half glass of water. It fizzes like Alka Seltzer. She would add a little sugar to make it easier for us kids when we were young. This is also good for acid reflux and indigestion.
Anyone remember mecurichrome (sp?) ? That was dad's treat-all-owies remedy. Now banned, for containing not-so-healthy chemicals.
Mom's stomach upset remedy was ginger ale and saltine crackers.
ABSOLUTELY! I use to NOT report scrapes/cuts/wounds because of the FEAR of mecurichrome with its glass ball applicator and BURN, BURN, BURN when applied! LOL
