Someplace between the two kids: Wisconsin. Yes its cold and snowy, but there are plenty of nice lakes for fishing etc.

Maybe somewhere like Shelbyville, Illinois? Though I'm an Indiana resident, I've visited the campground there several times and thought it was a really pretty area.

I second Wisconsin. I have a place in the Wisconsin Dells and I think you'd easily find something in your price range that is on or near a lake or river. Amtrak runs through the Dells once a day I think.

Just a thought. I've been looking at the loft condos in Minneapolis & some are really enticing. You can look at the snow without being in it, health care opportunities & transport to amtrak. Something to ponder.

you didn't say what part of Missouri you are considering but the suburbs of Kansas City are very livable and KC is beautiful city with tons of stuff to do, train station and airport.
