If you don't appreciate that music or the feeling of being part of an "event," I don't think that there is any way to explain to you the sheer joy and exhilaration I felt at some of those events.
Well, I don't appreciate either the music or the feeling of being part of an event like that, so I think you are probably right that there is no way to explain it to me. As I said before, I was hoping someone would try anyway.
At 12-years of age, I was home having a temper tantrum because I wasn't allowed to go with my brother (19) and his friends. Yeah...as though he would take me anyway, right?
I have no idea where I was and what I was doing on that date. But attending Woodstock would have been at the bottom of the list of things I was interesting in doing, right along with being burned alive as a victim of the Spanish Inquisition.
Can some of you explain to me what the attraction of such an event was?
SERIOUSLY?? I was only 8 years old at that time and had a 16 year old sister and 19 year old brother who were into all of those bands. I knew even then at 8 years old this would be an event that would go down in history. I remember my brother having the albums and he had hippie friends who looked like they just stepped out of Woodstock. I was so lucky to have had older sisters and brothers to turn me on at a young age to great 60's and 70's music. Damn, wish I would have been part of that history.

I should have said this sooner...... thank you for your service. I was not there but did hear my cousin talk about it...... brutal. He had nightmares for a long time after he got home.
I was in JR HS. Didn't hear about it for a few months. Saw the movie about eight years later. If you had asked me what big event would be commemorated decades later, I'd have said the Apollo 11 landing. Would have never guessed Woodstock.

I was 21 months old & in Japan, with my new baby sister.
My dad was stationed at Tachikowa AFB & my parents had relocated in 1966, before I was even thought of.
They had access to American newspapers but I'm not sure how timely it was nor if Woodstock was even on their radar. I do know my dad was horrified when he returned home & saw the changes just in his hometown; he had us packed up & moved within 6 months. His hometown was Boulder.
Cool - I was seven years old and my dad was in the Air Force and we were stationed at Yokota Air Force Base just outside of Yokohama, Japan.
I didn't know a thing about Woodstock for years. I was too young for the hippie scene and we didn't live in the States during a lot of that era. When we did, we lived on military bases, so I wasn't exposed to much of it. I do recall hearing about the Sharon Tate murders though and being horrified by those.
I was 20 years old and working as a computer operator in New York City. I remember seeing those iconic posters in the subway announcing a three-day festival of peace and music with a list of rock and folk acts that was extremely impressive. I really wanted to go, but it wasn't that simple.
The problem was that my office mate was the only other person who was trained on the computer system we used, and she was going on vacation. So I really needed to be at work on Monday. My boyfriend, a college student, also had a full-time job. So we decided not to go. That weekend we heard all the news about the New York Thruway being shut down because of the crowds and the resulting chaos, and we realized we'd made the right decision.
A friend of mine went, and she told me later that it was cold, wet and miserable with not enough bathrooms or food, and she couldn't get close enough to the stage to hear the music. That made me feel a little bit better about missing such a historic event. The film Woodstock was also a consolation prize. I saw it twice, once when I was coming down from an acid trip.
Another consolation prize came many years later. I was working on the studio crew of a San Francisco TV station when one night, Wavy Gravy was in the studio taping a segment for one of our shows. After the taping, the crew was invited to come down and have some ice cream. I made a beeline for the studio and was served Ben and Jerry's Wavy Gravy by Wavy himself. He's a really sweet guy.
16 years old, innocent and working my 1st real summer job.
To this day no one played the Star Spangled Banner better than Hendrix. Highlight of the show.
Well... maybe seeing CSN&Y might have beat Jimi.
Or was it Country Joe and the Fish singing "Give me an F".
So many good highlights.
On a side note... I'm still in love with the young Linda Ronstadt. Talk about a beauty!
