LOL, it's not tornado country. The western part of the state has substantially more tornadoes than the eastern part. I'm next to the Ohio River in KY. If this is tornado country than so is south eastern Ohio. Tornadoes can happen but they are not a regular event here.
When I lived in Alabama we had a tornado landed less than 200 yards from the house. The billboard got all twisted and mangled.
Tornado path are usually predictable. They're also very narrow that's why you see houses one one street got demolished but the next street homes are untouched.
When you die, it does not matter whether you owned the house or not. You don’t own anything. No one ever owns anything, they just pass along the right to live there.

It matters to your estate if you want someone to be able to live there (like a family member). In my case, the animal shelter is aware that they will either sell my house or pay off the mortgage and have it for staff housing. In any case, it'll be their's. But I won't have to play rental games until the end of my life. The real estate wars can be pretty brutal in desirable areas.

What’s the law on single homeowners that need social services. Nursing home in old age or caregivers provided by the state if such is available. Can you keep a house then? I think in NY its possible. Not aware of other state laws.
BTW, you're not in your PJ all day and have 20 cats running around your house, do you? LOL
Nope. I'm a Master Gardener and actively involved in community projects as well as my own extensive gardens. Do you have something against "Old Gardening Ladies" as well?
