I've never seen concrete floors--do you mean tile?
Is it possible to lay down insulation on top of that floor and then maybe some of that install-yourself laminate flooring?
I'm very impressed with your doing your own countertops! How do you do that?
Humor is everything
PS--by the dog, if you're referring to smell in the old carpets, just sprinkle baking soda very liberally all over the underfloor and the smell will go away.
No tile, just concrete. You can stain it and then polish if you wish. Very popular. The countertops we have done in the past with a former home and I love them. You just build your frame and then pour in place or you can do them outside and cast them then drag them in. Too heavy for us.
I don't think they had a dog. The home is 35 years old and the former residents have moved into a nursing home. Most of the homes were built between 1960 for the first phase up to 1979-80. We are looking forward to this adventure.

There are some beautiful rammed earth floors, and variations of such.
The IRS may need to rethink 29 yr depreciation, if we return to earth construction. Those structures last for many centuries, I suppose the 'building trade unions' (and bloated county planning departments) will not be too supportive of such longevity.
me and hubby bought some land about ten years ago.we never really did much out there till we got it paid off.then me and him...both oldies drew up our own plans to build our cabin.i would haul a board. He would nail the board.we would sit and rest for a while.it took us a summer of going down to our woods that summer whenever we could.our cabin is done. Then we bought the adjoining land...7,000$ for an acre and a quarter.well we found out there is a well on that property.so we are going out there soon.to build a cabin with a kitchen in it and a loft to sleep in.we are gonna look on craigs list to get free building supplies cause we had to give our last monies to our 30yr old daughter.
we plan to retire out there in a couple of years.off the power grid.hunting is something i am learning now.i got a little squirrel gun for xmas.we have a huge meadow to grow a garden in.it is higher elevation.it can freeze any nite of the year.it is so wonderful up there.up between chemult, oregon and chiloquen oregon.beautiful country up there.the air so fresh.i would move there right now if i could get my dear hubby to go.he is so good...paying off bills while i babysit the little grandsons.i have been watching them for 12 yrs now.i use to work and tend them.all got to be too much.anyway.we are trying right now to be on the one dollar a day menu...it is hard.i think we fail...but there is always tomorrow.

Interesting post! I think I just got a whiff of that wonderful clean air!
Sounds like you two are really self sufficient, I admire that.
concrete floor and countertops is very "in" now with the urban/loft crowd...granite is becoming so yesterday!
I always thought granite looked and felt "cold." Plus, granite countertops in a modest home -- overdone, too polished and sleek. I love the look of slate as in a slate sink.
I assume concrete floor lasts forever and never has to be resurfaced?
