Probably just as well, didn't sound like the guy was ever fit to run a business. Hopefully they can bring in somebody who will restore the place to the excellence it was known for.

I never understood the fuss about them. I think it was just because they were on the route to the beach; there donuts aren't special in any way.

Nah they were pretty good, at least talking 10 or so years ago. Perhaps this guy let the quality slide over the years, IDK. They were old school donuts done right, where else do you really find those in the area? I prefer that to these new "artisan/designer" donut places popping up everywhere. I know some are all about PVD Donuts, etc. but that's just not my cup of tea.

Now I have since moved from RI many years ago (although still visit family and friends regularly) but it used to be Rhode Islanders were very traditional and loyal to RI businesses such as restaurants and the like. Allies was always a stop on the way to the beaches or a weekend drive and yes they were fresh and smelled great. My wives family had the same type of loyalty to Wrights Farm. That was their traditional Sunday dinner when they went out. The same can be said about Aunt Carries that may have changed a bit but if you lived in RI it was a must stop.
Born and raised Rhode Islanders place a lot of value and loyalty on food within their borders. There are many Rhode Islanders who relished their visit to the Rocky Point Chowder Hall as one of their fondest memories of growing up in RI.
While I will not get into the discussion about Allies decision to take a stand and make a statement about discounts, as a business no matter how strong your political beliefs may be you have to acknowledge in todays society social media is a sword that can cut a very wide path and your business not your integrity could be at risk.

I think the new places go overboard, but I still believe Allies was overrated. Trust me, I worked with people who got excited over Allies "cakes", and there's just no explaining it! Donut Kettle, Matos or a lot of places were better, but Allies had location.

You mean Matos bakery in Pawtucket? They had good doughboys, but that's more specialty thing. Wouldn't necessarily consider that a "donut shop". Point is, most of these places are gone. Even chains like Honey Dew had delicious donuts back in the day, but they are garbage now.

Not where I meant, but anyway you were talking about how Allies used to be good, and that was my point- there were plenty of places as good or better.
