OMG!!!!
Due to the Dysfunctional U.S. Congress and irrelevant President who have failed the American people once more this time
Its Postal Reform. The Greensboro mail processing facility will be handling twice their load of mail, with over 2 million pieces of mail being trucked there and returning BACK to Roanoke? Has anyone in Washington traveled on US 220 from Roanoke to
The NC state line? I think this action by the govt should alert us all the Postal Service delivery system has a bleak future.
The workers who will relocate to NC will soon find themselves without a job in a short time. Oh well, its time to say goodbye to
The postal service. I would be curious if anyone thinks a private company will take oved the U.S. Postal Service.

I think that is the current plans, however there is talk of putting enough pressure on congress to make the do some cuts elsewhere to keep Roanoke and a bunch of others open. Remember Roanoke handles Lynchburg mail. So people in Lynchburg will have to send mail to Roanoke then to Greensboro and back to Roanoke to get mail to someone else in Lynchburg. Now I am sure something will be worked around but that possibility is crazy.

Hopefully things can be figured out because we have till 2015 before they try to start moving it. According to the union leaders in Roanoke representing the Roanoke office if congress didn't require the postal service to fund retirement packages 75 years in advance the PS would have made about 3 million in revenue last year.. Take that with a grain of salt, but if its true then WOW.

We don't have people in Congress who understand what "Compromise " is all about. Rep Bob Goodlatte should tell his buddies in Congress Roanoke is in a tough terrain with an inadequate highway to Greensboro. If Interstate 73 had been built 20 years ago to NC then a link with Greensboro might be a bit easier. If the post office does move and mail is delayed here I will hand deliver my mail personally. For the folks in Lynchburg, I hope they bus their mail to GSO. I thought the closings of post offices was odd, now its apparent these, crazies are really serious? Next topic is I understand the Highway Trust Fund is broke and Congress wants to shut down highway construction, maintenance threatening our fragile economic recovery.

As the thread continues I have to remind you all that this is not the politics forum, if you want to rant about the president or congress or whatnot - do it there. Here, focus on the local side of the issue.
Yac.

Lynchburg mail will not go to Roanoke anymore. It will go to Greensboro, and then get a return trip to Lynchburg. This has been a long time coming- mail is slightly slower, but when we lost our processing center in Lynchburg, I worked hard to get all my customers to accept emailed docs instead of mailed ones. I save at least 15.00 a week!

This was a very interesting piece on the postal center issue in today's R-Times...

There is a news story on the Roanoke Times about congressmen taking a stand (sort of) against the closing of the Roanoke office and with local and state report they believe the decision to move will be overturned.

Its a dumb idea and Greensboro is not crazy about the plan, almost doubling their volume of mail!! I am losing confidence in
The USPS but closing Roanoke is not the answer for their money woes.
