You gotta remember, Rochester is a mid-sized city located in the same state as one of the most iconic places on the planet. I've talked to many people from out of state who simply cannot grasp the notion that people can be from NYS but not NYC; NYS and NYC are literally synonymous to a lot of people in the world. And as soon as these people get over the shock of finding out that human lifeforms actually live outside of NYC, they immediately relegate these people as being 'fake New Yorkers'. Trust me, I've actually heard this! So, it's almost impossible for an out-of-stater to evaluate Rochester objectively. Rochester has just as much to offer--if not more--than any city of it's size; the only difference is that Rochester happens to be in the shadow of one of the most famous places in the world. There is plenty of culture, nightlife, and things to do in Rochester-- but its quite hard to create awareness of this when you're sharing a state with a city of over 8 million people
