If they did MS, I'd actually say to look maybe around the college towns or in the southern portion of the state.

If you want heritage and rural, I'd say Tuskegee would be a good bet to have nearby. Personally, I'd say Eufaula, AL, just because I find the area pretty.

As you likely know, many likely came via the migrant farm route to many of these rural areas. Some may work at facilities in the area or local companies as well.

With that said, it looks like they want places with milder weather during the winter.
Thanks for the update, I didn't know the black population was quite that high. Good to see, Albion (from what I recall) is a nice little town. As you said though, WNY winters aren't what they are looking for. Winters are one reason I moved from Idaho to TN, 2 snowfalls, of 2" each, is a nice change from months of winter.

I am starting to look into rural areas for moving to in a couple of years. The thing is that I have a black son and want an area that will be safe for him and have a good number of black people around since I am a single mom and am white. I want him to get exposure to the other half of his heritage!
I am looking for a place where a bit of land for homesteading is available, as well. Which always makes things more interesting. I would prefer a more mild climate than the far north of the country.
TIA!
I would say to also look into parts of VA around say Charlottesville or KY around Lexington as well due to the major college presence and the areas are diverse enough to meet your criteria.

Much of central and eastern NC and VA are reasonably diverse. Pitt County, North Carolina where Greenville and East Carolina University are is 36% African American, Greene County which borders Pitt to the west is 40%.

Granville County, NC is directly to the North of Wake County (which has Raleigh) and is 55% white and 30% AA. Warren County to the north of Granville is very rural, and has an African American plurality (48%.) Vance County is due east of Wake, Southeast of Warren, is 48% white 38% African American.

Oklahoma has a bunch of little black towns, including one college town Langston, which may be a little more diverse.
