I'm looking to Get a place of my own and just wanted to know more about Avenel NJ I read about its history and it seemed somewhat similar to my current residence but wanted to get more information about the community any information is helpful. Are apartment or condo easily attainable in that area.
Condos and apts are probably easy & cheap to find in Avenel...but for good reason. I don't know where you live now, but (especially) if you're a woman, I don't think the area is safe...and of course it is the home of the Avenel Correctional Facility. If you don't care about safety, and want cheap, you've found it.
Rahway (right next door) is a lovely area, Linden, Roselle, Roselle Park, Elizabeth ~ all better areas and have lots of reasonable places to live too.
Hope this helps. Good luck with your choice.
I grew up in Avenel, and at the time it was mostly working class whites. There was an area off of Rahway Ave toward Rahway that had some black families, but there weren't many. Now, 30 years later, the town is a mix of ethnic groups.
IMO, the area has deteriorated. When we were growing up, the houses were well-kept, everyone knew everyone else, and the kids roamed freely around the neighborhood. My mother finally moved out last year because the area was going downhill. There were a number of homes and multifamily units that went to Section 8 housing, groups of kids would wander the streets at all hours hooting and hollering, and the houses started to become unkept.
So, Avenel will definitely fit your desire for diversity, but that's about it's only good point IMO. If you must move there, I'd look at the area bounded by Route 1 and St Georges Ave- the other end of town toward Rahway Ave has gotten crappy.
