Not only is out metro area twice as big, but if you include the "uncity" portions of sac (areas like south sac and arden-arcade, which use Sacramento as their address and technically are just outside the city limits but are unincorporated areas) then our population is more like 650k+, and even those 2 areas alone would make us way bigger than Fresno. Not to mention were home to 2.3 mil people whereas Fresno only recently broke 1 mil.

And no, our population is not spread out all the way to Tahoe. yes, Tahoe is in Eldo County which is technicaly part of our metro area but there is nothing between El Dorado Hills/Cameron Park and Tahoe population wise. The bulk of the people in our region are in Sac county and southwest placer county, which is only ~30 miles away from downtown and not "in the boonies" as youre implying. Also if you look at downtown in terms of the people that work there and live in the suburbs our central city is FAR bigger than anything Fresno would ever dream of. Downtown Fresno is a ghost town.

Ive already gone thru a list of all the MLB cities that are smaller than Sac and a plethora of reasons why we could support a team. many of the cities I listed have 2 professional franchises! Cincinatti, Cleveland, and Kansas City all have and NFL franchise to go along with the MLB franchise (Cleveland actually has 3 pro franchises). We can support these teams here. We led attendance for the Kings for decades when they were cellar dwellars in the NBA and people here are baseball crazy. We can def support the A's.
Sac has no flavor. It's a pretty decent central area(sac city) with a whole lot of boring white suburbs. Add those uni cities they want nothing to do with you. And technically if your 30 miles out side of sac in any direction and not in the boonies it goes to show how low density the area is. But for sac is waaaaaay bigger msa wise just not the city itself which matters some. I find it odd you can never find sacramento's pop only their metro(low esteem).

you really can't judge a city by its population. Miami, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh all have lower city proper population than Fresno and Sacramento. Still we all now these cities are much better than the central valley cities.

Now, Fresno peeps are envious that we (Sacramento) have separated ourselves from the other major valley towns. The city has lost its "armpit of California" moniker years ago. Yes, Sacramento proper is not as urban; there are no gigantic skyscrapers, you won't find a great mass transportation system, or 3 or 4 sports franchises...BUT Sac has character - much more than Fresno - the tree-lined streets, the grid, the American and Sacramento River, the American River Parkway, our central city neighborhoods (downtown, midtown, east sac, land park), along with a little bit of grit (oak park, south sac). One of the most diverse populations in the country - that alone speaks for itself.

Next month Sac Intl will open a four-story glass and steel terminal. The Powerhouse Science Center is under construction; Perhaps, just maybe, a brand new sport and entertainment complex in the railyards for events and yes, the Kings - at least we have a professional team. The only thing Fresno looks forward to is a Fresh and Easy Neighborhood Market.

Oh, and not to rub it in, but our minor league baseball team, the Sacramento River Cats is in the PCL championship - again. What have the Fresno Cubbies, I mean Grizzlies have done for you lately.

Peace!

Most cities in the United States are surrounded by a whole lot of boring white suburbs--including San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. And technically, being 30 miles outside of most cities in any direction is going to put you in either low-density suburbs or open country.

Sacramento's population was 466,488 as of the last census. It's not particularly hard to find--try Wikipedia or the City of Sacramento website. As to flavor, I beg to differ. It mostly tastes like tomatoes and coffee to me. A bit acidic, but I like it that way.

A's come to Sacramento for exhibition game against River Cats - Sacramento Sports - Kings, 49ers, Raiders, High School Sports | Sacramento Bee (http://www.sacbee.com/2011/12/14/4123031/as-come-to-sacramento-for-exhibition.html - broken link)

A's coming to Raley Field for an exhibition game! Hopefully this game gets hyped up a bit so we can sell out and show the A's that we're capable of supporting them and filling up a stadium, even for a pre-season exhibition game!

I agree that cities many are. But I heartily dispute this when it comes to Los Angeles. For better or worse, there is certainly nothing boring as far as recreational/ entertainment availabilty, about any suburb or city within 30 miles of Los Angeles, in the same context as the sleepy areas that surround Sacramento. And it's ok because many like yourself, prefer things low key that way, or as some would call boring.

Fully discussing HSR is outside the scope of this thread, but personally I think that being the northern end of the first functioning American HSR line would bring Sacramento one heck of a lot more national acclaim and civic identity than another sports team...although the resulting acclaim and civic identity might end up attracting another sports team as a result!
This is my feeling also. Especially when I keep reading implied comparisions to SF and LA. If you want to roll like those guys, you need to think Big like they have to. But it still seems that there is resistance here to any talk of advancing the city to competitive 21st century levels. But that is what big city life entails. If you want to upgrade to better, you will have to do so eventually. Just as cars get old, you have to pay, with inflation, sometimes more, to keep it running.

The A's are actually so bad that the Rivercats is actually a pretty even match for them. Most of their players go back and fourth, hahaha

Kind of true, I believe the entire A's OF from last year has left the team.

You guys can't even get a new arena done for a team that put the city on the map, that had success and that's been in town since 1985 with better than average ownership. Arco Arena is a relic and has outlived its usefulness. It lacks the amenities to raise more revenue which is needed to bring in stars and win. Not only that but many performers will not hold events there because of acoustic issues. They are skipping town and going to other venues in rival cities. This is money (taxes) that Sacramento can use.

Now you're dreaming about building a 45,000 seat baseball stadium with no baseball team in town? If the Kings leave Sacramento will NEVER EVER get another major sports team in town. People are dreaming if they think the team's ownership needs to pay 100% to finance a stadium/arena. To build anything like this so monumental it takes a partnership with the owners, developers and the tax paying PUBLIC for a city like Sacramento that doesn't have too many large corporations in town. This is something that Sacramento just doesn't get.

-Cheers.
