In the middle of a worse cesspool unfortunately - also known as Downtown Sacramento.
One thing to mention, especially with out-of-towners looking to relocate, is that when people rave on how "great" Sacramento is they should really be more specific as to what location in the region they are talking about. What I find really annoying are all these random comments such as, "my friend moved here from___and loves it"! Ok, where exactly in the area is "here"? Downtown and many parts of the city proper is seedy and not very good. Carmichael, Fair Oaks - much, much better. South Placer - very fabricated and boring although very safe. Natomas - South bad, North better. See the rhythm here?
Real easy folks.

Depends what you're looking for. I lived in the heart of L.A. for over a decade and loved it...but eventually I tired of the big city (coincided with the first grey hairs!), and wanted someplace quiet, uncrowded, but not too isolated. I live and work in Davis, now.

My daily commute in L.A. I spent about 2-1/2 to 3 hrs a day on the 405 between SFV to West LA...in Davis, my commute to work is a 15 min ride on a three-speed bicycle over quiet tree-lined residential streets. I don't have the stomach for the urban environment like I used to, but if I need a dose of city, Sac is a 20-min drive and SF is about an hour away. (Attended the S.F. Silent Film Festival recently, it was great!)
