Easy answer--midtown Sacramento. Seventh largest gay/lesbian community in the country, lots of nightclub/social options, commute is about 20 miles but traffic isn't so bad. If you want a little quieter option you could choose Natomas, a bit north of the central city, a relatively quite residential neighborhood a couple miles closer to Woodland. Not much in the nightlife department, and the newer North Natomas is possibly flood-prone.

Davis is a college town. It is expensive, because it is a college town and because they really can't expand. It might be more convenient to get to Woodland, and there are recreation options of the sort that appeal to college students, but if you're over 25 that might wear a little thin. Davis is considered liberal to the point where many refer to it as "the People's Republic of Davis." I don't really know how gay-friendly it is: not a danger spot, I'd imagine.

True enough, but really, there aren't really any places to live between Midtown and Woodland except Natomas.

There's always Woodland, I suppose, or one of the smaller rural communities around Woodland. The "close to fun" thing limits Woodland's potential a bit--I like Woodland (great for antique shopping, for example) but it's not exactly packed with excitement.

I wouldn't think it would be super tollerant, either. It has been a farming type place for so long. Lots of hick types... Just sayin'.

I agree. Once you venture away from Sacramento into the rural areas it's extremely redneck and intolerant - especially most of the foothill communities and Placer County. Stay far away.

I would definitely choose midtown, although Davis could be an option. It is a college town, so it is student-oriented.

Davis is gay-friendly. We held hands and no one commented. Not like here in SoCal.
