Is charging for parking at a mall a common practice in Utah?
It all depends. Suburban malls almost never charge, but it's a common practice in the downtown area. I believe City Creek Center and The Gateway both allow one hour of free parking, though.

I know that at The Gateway, you can collect validations (a validation is a separate little card, the size of your parking ticket, and not just a stamp on your ticket) and use them forever. So if you go to three stores in The Gateway, ask for a validation at each one. Let's say that you were shopping for an hour and forty-five minutes. You'd only need one validation since the first hour was free. You could hang on to the two others and use them another time when you were down there for three hours and didn't buy a thing.

As we left City Creek the other day, I asked the parking attendant what the rates were. He told me, but I'm afraid I can't remember exactly. I'll double-check and post them here. They were actually quite reasonable, though. The only bad thing is that, right now at least, only a few stores are actually validating (Macy's and Nordstrom are for sure).

Check out this video of what the Huffington Post calls "the Mormon Shopping Mall." Seriously, can you possible imagine anything cooler? Or hotter?

Well, poo to being closed on Sunday. Lol I guess I'll have to go during the week. Wanted hubby to go, but, I guess I'll go solo 1st. Thx for letting me know it's closed on sunday, as it would've been a wasted trip downtown.

For those interested in going, here are the hourly rates for parking (not too bad, in my opinion):

Under 1 hour Free
Under 2 hours $1
Under 3 hours $2
Under 4 hours $5
Under 5 hours $8
Under 6 hours $11
Under 7 hours $14
Under 8 hours $17
Over 8 hours (i.e. daily maximum or lost ticket) $20

Oh... and they take debit cards for parking, so if you don't have cash on you, it's no biggie.

I do plan on seeing it - but I think I'll wait a few months for the hub-bub to calm down.

I suggest you all read the article in this week's City Weekly about the struggle for the downtown dollar - between Gateway, Trolley Square and City Creek. Very interesting.

Yes, there is MONEY here in Utah - but enough to keep Tiffany's and the other expensive shops going? Probably not. How many years was Crossroads Mall there? Malls have half-lives.... you pretty much can tell how long they will exist by it.

I think it's a shame they are closed on Sundays. So go to church in the morning and take your family out for a stroll in the mall in the afternoon.... what's the problem?

I rarely go downtown - The Gateway didn't entice me either - not my demographic and no stores geared to women in my agegroup. I think I'll continue to shop online. Save on gas and money and time.

Explain your rationale here. Crossroads didn't close because it was too expensive.

If anyone here hasn't seen O.C. Tanner's flagship store, which is across State Street in the old planetarium, I highly recommend you do so. It's a beautiful store, and much larger and nicer, not to mention just as pricey, as Tiffany's. It's significant because O.C. Tanner has been in Utah for decades, and decided to make that huge investment a few years ago. It shows that they've been hugely successful here, and that they're more than confident in their future here. In fact, the Rolex store at City Creek is actually an outlet of O.C. Tanner.

High end stores like that don't rely on masses patronizing them to stay in business. They really only need a handful of well-heeled clients to stay in business, which Utah can easily provide.
