My husband may be relocated to SLC for his job. He would be working near the airport. We have a forclosure on his credit that we are waiting to clear over the next few months. So not sure if we will rent or be able to buy. Renting, we would want a townhouse if possible. If buying we want to be in a good school district, close to amenities and not too long of commute to the airport (30 mins). We could spend about $200,000 or a little more on a house. If renting...$1000ish per month. We are not LDS and don't go to church regularly. We have never been to SLC so not sure where to start looking? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

I've been in ut for 6 years from WI. You might consider the new development on 5600 west. I don't have any financial interest in the project, just thought it would work for you. West Valley would be considered blue collar neighborhood reasonably priced. Some of the stuck up locals avoid the west side, anything east of 900 east is more expensive, Magna is the cheapest. Stay in Salt lake county, or possibly tooele if you like a little slower pace more country feel. Moderator cut: no RE ads

Stansbury Park has some nice homes around that price. It is about 30 minutes west of the airport located in Tooele County. Very good schools and a welcoming, accepting neighborhood.

That's rich GMB........"stuck up locals". It doesn't take but 5 minutes of surfing the www.crimereports.com site to come to the conclusion that WVC isn't the "garden spot" of America to live in. Sorry but sometimes the truth hurts. It has it's reputation for a GOOD reason....or should I say for all the wrong reasons

Sorry, dcisive, but crimereports.com is neither accurate nor statistically sound. If you're making decisions based on that kind of "science," you're a fool.

What is not accurate about it?

There's a lot of new stuff actually in West Valley City, and West Jordan, both pretty close to the airport. There's condos throughout SLC that may be nice as well. Airport is within 15 minutes and light-rail goes right to it.

For one, different law enforcement agencies report crimes under different categories and time frames so it's really not possible to accurately compare multi-jurisdictional areas.

Two, some agencies don't report some crimes; it depends on their privacy policies and investigation cycle. An agency I nice worked or, for example, didn't report sex crimes to these types of entities until the case had been closed for several months. If it never got closed....

Third, the last time I visited the site there was no metric accounting for population---no per capita calculation. Of course there are fewer crimes in Holladay and Cottonwood Heights than in WVC and SLC! There are many, many more people in WVC and SLC than in Holladay and Cottonwood Heights. Looking at a downtown block, for example, shows a number of crimes while looking at a similarly sized Sandy block shows many fewer...never considering that the Sandy block has 23 people living on it in 8 households while the downtown block has 235 people in a 100-unit apartment building.

Thank you. That is a much better answer than calling someone a fool who doesn't know all of that inofrmation.
