I'm not saying that it sucks, I'm saying that to say there aren't any good tex mex places here and to say that this place is better than all places here in town is pretty naive. How does the OP know? Has the OP been to ALL of the tex mex places in town? Have you? It might very well be a good place....I don't know but I do have my favorite places that aren't in magazines that are amazing in their own right. Don't get me wrong on the chain, some of the best enchiladas I've have been from a chain - Blanco Cafe.

Name me 5 mom-n-pops around me (I'm near Sea World) within a 5 mile radius. Everyone talks about all these great Tex-Mex places--well, where are they?? I have found only three: Taco Hut (which really isn't that great but we like it), Henry's (yummy), and Tiago's (and that's a chain, but local to SA). Please, recommend some other places to me that I don't have to travel 20 miles to get to...because I SURE never had to do that in Houston. I mean, I have to say, our biggest disappointment in moving here has been the Tex-Mex. We thought it was lack of decent Chinese but that's really not been the problem. It's Tex-Mex, plain and simple. We were SO excited to move here because we thought we'd have places all over. Nope.

I'm not defending chains--you're mistaken. I'm defending a home-grown Texas restaurant that has 3 locations in Houston. Again, do I need to point out the irony here? San Antonio=chain central!

And MattTX, you're pretty rude--"some people need to move back to Houston." You know, we love San Antonio, but honestly...some of y'all have your heads in the clouds about a few things.

Excuse me? That wasn't towards you.

Sorry it offended you.

LOL

M2F, there really isn't anything out by Sea World that would be considered mom n pop Tex-Mex. Unless you are thinking along the lines of Tink-a-Taco which to me is not very good........blasphemy, I know.

I wish there were more places like Don Pedro's ( on SW Military Drive ) on this side of town. Or Karam's, which closed. "Nicer" ( no, I'm not talking 5-stars here ) but clean restaurants and good food.

MattTx, Why are you being so rude, saying that I need to move back to Houston? Just because I've said I haven't found a tex-mex restaurant that I really like yet. I was excited to tell all in San Antonio about a great restaurant that happened to originate in Houston come to San Antonio and all hell broke loose. It seems that if you're not an original San Antonian, than you don't know anything about tex-mex food. That's not true at all. I know a lot about tex-mex being that I was born in Texas and brought up on Mexican food. Thank you to the others for listing a few places for me to try. I have tried quite a few places out, but no, I haven't tried them all. Believe me, I would like to find some good tex-mex restaurants here more than anyone. I will definitely try some of the one's mentioned.

It shouldn't matter to whom it was directed. We all have something in common--we're all Texans. That should mean something, IMHO. It's depressing to think that so many can't see the good in each wonderful part of this great state.

You are right. It was rude. I am sorry. I just get tired of people moving here and griping about how we don't have this or that.

I understand. Listen, on the Houston forum we would get people from L.A. or CHItown or NYC that just would beat us down for being "rednecks". I always thought that was so funny. Houston is, to me, so NOT redneck, though certainly there are some! It was always frustrating for me to have to say, "hey, um, we're actually pretty cosmopolitan..." but you know how people are.

I apologize for saying that "there aren't any good tex-mex restaurants here." What I should have said is that I'm sure there are some good tex-mex restaurants here, but I haven't found one I like yet, could you please suggest some for me to try.
Speaking of trying restaurants, does the El Chapparal off of 1604 compare to the one in Helotes?

Gross. My sister always drags me to the one off of 1604 Red Land exit. The food is not bad, but they give you kids' meal portions. I always still feel hungry every time I come out of there.

TexasRedneck,
We decided to try El Chapparal today for lunch. We did like it. Thanks for recommending it.
