Hello all! I'm a new out of state transplant to the fine city of San Antonio. I had a question regarding the order in which to do driver's license, registration, and vehicle plates.

It seems based on the websites I checked out (Tx DPS and Tx dot) that you need to do the vehicle registration first which will allow you to get the new plates and you need vehicle registration in Texas to get the drivers license. Is that right? I'm trying to get the correct order down in order to minimize back and forth between the different offices. Any helpful tips will be appreciated!

Thanks in advance

You're wise to check into this. When I moved to Texas, I attempted to do them the opposite of the way that was allowed and had to wait in line twice at one of the places. Unfortunately, that was 9 years ago and I no longer remember which has to be done first. The order you quoted sounds right, but I'm not certain.

Here's a link to a recently-updated thread discussing which Driver's License office to use and when to go there to avoid a long line: //www.city-data.com/forum/san-a...-office-2.html

The order...

1) State inspection of your vehicle
2) Registration and plates (bring papers from 1)
3) Driver's license

Went through this last summer with the additional step
of dragging my vehicle to the Customs office at the airport
for certification of operation in the United States... which
is required before you complete step 2 above.

Thank you! Almost missed the state inspection step. That would have been...not good :0

Yep...

Also, when going to the DMV for your license, do not forget your passport or social security card.

Just went through this as well... and I wish I would have read this first, because I tried in the opposite order!! Anyway, don't forget, you have to get your registration and plates at the county's tax assessment office. Don't ask me why... I personally don't think it makes any sense!!

But like Paul56 said, do the inspection first, then registration & plates, and then finally the liscense.

Speaking of social security card... I also went through that last summer.

Best place to go, at least for those out Schertz area, is the office up in
Seguin... 927 South Highway 123 Byp, Seguin -(877) 445-0831

Bring all your papers and talk to the nice ladies at the window booth inside when you are called up. I found the process painless.

An update. I got my inspection and vehicle registration/plates done. Just had one tip to add. Call your insurance company in advance and get a copy of your policy because the people at the tax assessors office told me that my previous state's insurance would not be accepted because it did not meet Tx minimums. My policy actually far exceeded the minimums, but I did not have my policy handy to show them. Thankfully I was able to call my carrier and they faxed the paper work to the tax assessors office.

Also, went to Boerne DMV to get my license and although not as crowded as the one on babcock road, it was still a few hour wait. I had to leave to try and come back earlier on another day.

Good luck all and thanks yet again for all of the tips in making this process relatively painless.

Hey, I lost my orignal Social Security card, but have a copy (scanned) of it I can print out. Would they take a copy?
