My nieces husband just got his new orders...they are being transfered to the military base in San Antonio for the next 4 years. Anyone know what the base is like? Is the housing decent on the base? They've been stationed in another country for the last 3 years on a very nice base with newer housing. I don't envision the base at San Antonio being similiar, but I might be wrong...

Any one lived there or currently living there?

There are three bases in the area. Randolph and Lackland Air Force Bases, and Fort Sam Houston. All three comprise what is now referred to as Joint Base San Antonio. Joint Basing is part of an effort by the DOD to reduce the overhead of having separate base operations activities for installations in close geographic proximity.

Lackland has some, relatively, newer housing that is good, but was pretty full when I was there. Can't speak for Randolph or Fort Sam.

With the cost of living in San Antonio, they might find equal or better housing off base to rent or buy for the housing allowance they will be provided.

There is a lot of new contract housing on Ft Sam as well, on the north side next to the golf course. Randolph has limited housing on base and much of the older housing has been razed over the years (much of the open area near the gates used to be housing). Lackland built a lot of new housing between the BX and Security Hill that looks nice.

Once your niece finds out which base her husband is going to, she should contact the housing office for that installation; but the vast majority of people stationed here do live off-base. We PCS'd here twice from overseas and had no problem finding homes.

Cheers! M2
