Once there came to be alternates with subscriptions that didn't charge late fees, they became the better option.
As far as the comparison to libraries, library fines on books are paltry compared to the $1/day late fees that Blockbuster charged. And there really isn't an alternative to libraries, if you want physical books and don't want to buy them.
