The only thing front plates are good for is to keep rocks & bugs off that small section of the bumper that they block.

I really don't get the backlash against inspections. They are there for your safety. Even if you are dead set against them TX safety inspections are a joke. In my home state an inspection took at least an hour and had to be performed by a licensed mechanic, so your car was at the shop all day. Wheels are pulled, brakes, struts, & tie rods are inspected - you know those things that would make for a very bad day when they fail on a crowded 65 mph urban freeway. A chip or crack in front of the driver (defined as left of center), no matter the size - failure, a crack or chip over 1/4 inch anywhere on the windshield - failure.

I've lived in inspection free states and have had my vehicle damaged due to unsafe vehicles jettisoning pieces. I'll take the inspections please.

Sounds like Virginia - they were pretty strict on their inspections, don't know if they still are or not. Used to drive the PD nuts when I was stationed there - they'd pretty much salivate when they saw my car coming down the road....'67 Ford Galaxie 500 tudor w/390, eight aces poking out of the hood, low profile tires & cheater slicks and side pipes.......all legal in Texas (where it was registered). Had some interesting conversations with 'em on the side of the road - would start out pretty harsh, but usually ended up with a nice discussion about souping up cars.

Close enough, another Commonwealth - PA, the no inspection state was AZ.

I was also wondering if it was Virginia. Their safety inspections are way more thorough and quite frankly done in a more professional/technical manner. I was surprised when we moved from 16 years in Reston, VA down here and had to get our two SUVs inspected. Really a joke in comparison. It's big business for the inspection stations up there and some expense as they require a bit of equipment that has to be inspected, calibrated, and maintained. I know from conversations with owners that up until we moved here it was keeping some stand alone gas stations open in the face of the pressure from the "Stop 'n Go" type mini market/gas stations we have here in San Antonio. I used the same inspection station in Great Falls, VA for 10+ years and he'd even gone as far as to close down his gas pumps and was surviving off of 3-4 repair bays, tire sales, and safety inspections.
