Barbaro is great!! Pizza, craft beer taps, and a full bar to boot. Vibe is a bit different from Monterey (same folks behind both), definitely more kid friendly. Only weak link is parking availability in a mostly residential neighborhood.
Hot Joy supposed to open at China Latina spot on S Alamo sometime next month.
Cured from Luke's ex Steven McHugh opened this weekend at the Pearl.

Thanks, Chaka and gtoman! We're looking forward to trying Barbaro soon!

I'm a little intimidated by The Monterrey - pretty sure we aren't cool enough!

it's not as pretentious as people make out. You don't have to be cool, you have to be adventurous. If your favorite restaurants are chains, you won't like it. But if you like trying out new and sometimes weird things, it's great. Staff is nice and fun and IME very un-pretentious.

It really isn't a hipster hangout, it's a food lovers hangout.

I was thinking of the infamous restaurant location on San Pedro, just north of North Park Lincoln-Mercury, and I remember now that it's not Barbaro.

Yeah, we aren't really chain restaurant people...unless we are with his parents who absolutely ARE chain restaurant people. (*sigh*) I'll put on my big girl britches and try The Monterrey.

That was Barbaresco, turned out to be a front for drug-laundering operation, detailed in this mySa story S.A. ties to drug cash detailed - San Antonio Express-News my favorite quote being:
"hosted an extravagant grand opening four years later featuring a seminude woman who posed as a food-serving “table,” with a violin frozen in a block of ice at her feet, while guests were treated to readings from “Romeo and Juliet.”

Speaking of that location, soon to be Rosarios northside, anyone heard of an opening date?

El Monty is NOT intimidating or attempting to be as such. It's for adventurous foodies, not style-mavens or hipsters.

Sure, they get their fair share there, but the folks who own Monty are as right as rain. Give it a shot (and HotJoy, when it reopens on S Alamo).
