Off topic but Thats the unfortunate dilemma most chefs deal with or completely avoid. People in San Antonio don't appreciate chef driven places nor do they want to pay the prices. Even if they are decent... Everyone would rather eat at chain places then support local talent. Sad but true!

Did you not read the article?

This place was NEVER suppose to make money.

All of his other ventures are thriving and making money.

I don't think that's as big of an issue in the Southtown area, where local chefs are thriving. The high demand of local supper clubs sponsoring top chefs is evidence of that.

The Monty faced some challenges:
*Minimal indoor seating = heavy dependence upon weather. Heat was not such a problem as it was well shaded but rain was problematic.
*Chefs - it was a great opportunity for Quealy to get started, and then he moved on.
*Fried fried fried - fun and different menu, but there's only so much fried and over-salted food people can take, and the more recent chefs didn't seem to diversify the menu (that's why we stopped going as often)
*Anything trendy will eventually die. People are fickle. The good stuff will evolve, but the hot spots change, the trendy crowd moves to a new hot spot and the old one, if it doesn't evolve, dies. The Monty burst on the scene, but after 5 years, didn't quite have its edge.

This closing is part of its evolution. It'll become something else, become the new hot spot for a time. That's not a bad thing.

But The Monterey was in Southtown, which is the restaurant about which we were discussing reasons for closure.

The poster you quoted clearly said the people of San Antonio and not the people of Southtown.

Default Frontier Burger

Frontier Burger is making a comeback. It will be located at Loop 410 and Crownhill next to the Magic Time Machine. Hope it is just as good as the original.
