I keep getting harassed by Jehovah's Witnesses knocking on my door and/or littering on my porch. How does everyone else keep these mentally ill people out of your neighborhood?

Open the door in your stained underwear, swastika drawn on your forehead, holding a beer bottle and a Playboy magazine.
Say "are you answering my personal ad?"....finish with a loud burp.

Put up a no soliciting sign on your door/patio.

And to call them "mentally ill" is a bit much. It's part of their evangelism. It might not be for you, but it's part of their journey and being respectful and just saying "no thank you" and encouraging them to pass your home and putting up a "no soliciting" sign should help.

I agree that they’re a nuisance, but your hostility is unnecessary.

I've had a "No Soliciting" sign posted by my front door for years, but I've found it to be ineffective at stopping solicitors from knocking/ringing my doorbell.

Anyway, persons soliciting on behalf of non-profit organizations or political campaigns, are exempt from COSA ordinances that prohibit contacting persons who display such signage. The only thing I can do is not open the door to persons I don't know.

And I've even gone a step further. I rigged a switch on my doorbell wires at the transformer inside the house, so I can shut it off if I'm not expecting anyone, and I don't want to be disturbed. At least it stops those persistent solicitors who insist on repeatedly ringing the doorbell.

I can turn my doorbell off but I can't turn my dog off.

Get rid of the dog then you have solved the problem. Jk of course.

How many times do they come by?

Put a pentacle wreath on your door. They won't bother you if they think you're Wiccan or pagan. Of course, then you'll have to explain to your visitors why it's on your door.
