kinda funny how this poll overwhelmingly supports streetcars, but opponents act like no one wants it.

^^^ One would have to know where the respondents live that voted in the poll.

Austin to San Antonio *light rail*? No.

Austin to San Antonio *commuter line*? Definitely!

Just a few months ago, when I was an intern in the City of Georgetown, there was a meeting on the Lone Star Rail Corridor, which would go from Georgetown, through Austin and San Marcos, and then end at San Antonio. There were still a lot of issues to contend with, but it seemed like there was a lot of renewed interest.

I would love this! I-35 scares me and I always take back roads when visiting friends in Austin, despite the extra time involved.

Moving ahead quickly now - public meetings are being held for the Environmental Impact Statement. Done in 3 years, construction could begin in 5-6.

If Nelson wants it, it will happen. C'est la vie.

Connecting San Antonio and Austin with rail would make Central Texas much more attactive to tourists

Yup - but what kind of ridership would there be? It would require a LOT of riders to even get close to break-even, and I just don't think that's going to happen. I spent 40 years in sales, and SA to Austin was one of the trips I absolutely hated - but a light rail system would have been useless to me with the multiple places I needed to be.

By and large, the cost-benefit factor doesn't look very favorable.

Agreed, but it is not going to happen any time soon, sadly.

Just because it may be useless to one person doesn't mean it is for the majority.

If it's meant for tourists...let them pay for it. Slap a small tax on hotels both here and in Austin. Pay for it that way. Lord knows how many arenas and stadiums I've helped pay for during my career while traveling on business.
