The insane asylum is somewhere near the missions where the ghost tracks and the donkeylady, and the ten foot tall chinese woman, and all of the other freaky things are.

The image that you are referring to is the remnants of the old Hot Wells Hotel. People have been trying to bring the old landmark back for years. I visited the place back in the 1980's before it became a shell. Here is an article on the old Hot Wells. Hot Wells

The old insane asylum everyone is referring to is further south on S. Presa past Loop 410, or at least between Military Highway and Loop 410. The site you have is north of Military Hwy, just south of Hot Wells Blvd. That gave me the clue.

Hot Wells was never an insame asylum. It was a hotel and a sanitarium. It had hot sulphur waters and everyone with certain maladies thought the hot water was a good treatment. Think President Roosevelt with polio and his Warm Springs Georgia resort.
Back around 1890-1900, T B was very common and people came in droves to San Antonio because of the climate and the hot sulphur waters of the hotel. Years later they built TB center across the road behind the State Hospital on South Presa. The State Hospital was an Insane Asylum. My aunt use to be the head nurse at the State hospital for the midnite shift. Boy she could tell some stories. The State Hospital is still open. It's on the opposite side of the road, just a few blocks further south.

There was an older state hospital built further south as in above post.

.
And so is the TB hospital. It's in high demand these days!

The grounds of both are really lovely!

It would be amazing if they did! I'd read about some efforts, but nothing happening.

What a gorgeous place. Too bad the NPS didn't nab it and link it to the Missions NP.

I am pretty sure it's fenced off. I drive by there a couple of times per week, and have noticed a gate across just about every opening near there. I'll have to investigate further. That area is a treasure trove. Further north, closer to the river, are some amazing houses seemingly hidden.

Wow, I didn't realize so much of the Hot Wells Resort was still standing! We've only see it from the road, which is not too clear. I might have to dig out the bike and ride down the San Antonio River trail to get a better look!

Cheers! M2
