I've been known to put off getting my inspection until 2-3 months after the due date. Hearing that the fine can be this hefty, I think I'll be more diligent about spending the 10 bucks before it expires.

I once went for almost three months before it dawned on me that my sticker was expired. There's a little building right next to the shopping center @ Huebner & Bandera that does nothing but inspections. It's quick and almost painless ($18, I think), you're in and out in no time as that's all that's done there.

I have a hard time feeling too much empathy for someone that commits an offense then complains about the fine for same. When you ignored it, you essentially said it wasn't worth your time to comply with the law. Well, the law caught you - still think it wasn't worth your time?

Now...having said that - in MANY jurisdictions, if you promptly get the problem rectified, and present proof of same to the judge, they'll minimize the fine and let you go on your way. Judging by your words, though, it may not be that simple for you - sounds to me like you pitched a hissy fit when checking on the fine. Definitely not one of your finer moments, IMO.....

Same thing happens to hubby. Now I mark it on my calendar for him! Maybe Mrs. Bowie can mark her calendar?

Why is this high-horse attitude acceptable when it's a speeding ticket (totally avoidable) and people pay a lawyer to get it dismissed? And yes, you sound like you rode in on a high horse. A perfectly inspected one, I'm sure, but a high horse nonetheless. Some people are busy, broke, or just plain dumb, but who are you to judge them? The inspections are basically a joke anyway, save for the brakes and the brake lights.

Once I tell her about this, she will not only mark the calendar... she will want to start getting inspections done a month before the due date.

what if you had been working on your vehicle, just got it going and could show you got it inspected right after being ticketed?

Sorry if it came off that way - not intended. But I DO have little sympathy for those that forget/broke/dumb, then try to blame the cop. That sticker stares you in the face every time you walk up to the car. Less than $20 - if you can't afford that, then I submit that you need to park it for a week until you can. Forget? Sorry - but if you can't look at that thing on your windshield ONE time in the month before it expires, then I submit that you're not very observant - and I don't know that you should be on the road if you think that's a justifiable "excuse".
For the record...yeah, I've forgotten mine. Got cited, sucked it up and got it inspected, went to court and was prepared to pay the fine. The clerk asked if I'd gotten it inspected. I replied that I had, SHE went into the judges' chambers and got it reduced to like a $10 "court cost".
It's one thing to come in, say "Hey - I goofed up and forgot to renew it - any way to minimize the fine?" That I'm cool with. It's another to blame "speed traps", etc., for YOUR failure to obey the law.
It's called "personal responsibility".....
