San Diego doesn't do "upscale beaches". Even the beach outside the Hotel Del is public and open to everybody.

I'm guessing none of our beaches will seem crowded to you, if you're accustomed to European beaches.

For nice-looking, clean beaches, try Coronado or Del Mar.

I agree that Malibu probably is your best bet. It's not in San Diego so you'll have to go further up North to Los Angeles but places like Paradise Cove Beach Club might work for you.

Although it can get crowded.

There are typically lots of Europeans (at least when I've gone) at Coronado and in La Jolla as well. I find the beaches really clean at Coronado although the water quality isn't always so clean. But of course I'm not sure what your definitely of "not crowded" is as it means different things to different people.

In lots of places I've been in Europe there aren't physically many people because they are really small areas where they have a set # of chairs out but I would still say crowded as there isn't a whole lot of room to walk around. Places like Monte Carlo, Nice, St. Tropez, Cannes, St. Jean -Cap Ferrat (Plague restaurant at Paloma Beach is one of my all time favorites..) are gorgeous and upscale but not too much room between chairs. Those types of places you won't find in San Diego.

As others said, all of our beaches are public.

The closest to what you want are probably Coronado, Torrey Pines, Carlsbad, and La Jolla. Solana Beach and Del Mar should be good as well.

Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and Ocean Beach are crowded party beaches. A lot of fun, but crowded.

Wrong coast for that.

Go to the east coast. From Long Island all the way up to Maine you will find what you seek.

They're different from Eruope in California - - no private beaches. But, go to "Marine Street Beach" in La Jolla. Once you park (parking is tough) it as close as you will get to a private beach. But - - bring your own food and drink. No vendors.

If you do go to East coast beaches in the Northeast, realize the town beaches are usually only open to town residents. If you are staying at a bed and breakfast, they may be able to give you a day pass. Some beaches make you purchase a day pass.

The East coast state beaches are often very nice, but not free to enter, at least the ones I am familiar with. Expect them to be crowded.
