Also seaport village downtown is a tourist trap, but they validate with purchase so its free under a few hours (maybe 2?). You could possibly park there, buy a coffee, i like the bookstore there, and walk to the midway (that was one of the places you wanted to see I think)

If you want to park downtown don't screw around. Just got to the Park it on Market on 6th and Market and park there. You'll be able to walk to anything you want downtown, and if you stick around for the night to experience the Gaslamp (or DoucheSkank as I call it on Friday and Saturday nights) you can get your car out of there.

There is street parking. It can be found during the day, but at night, forget it. You'll spend more on gas than you will on parking.

You can park downtown free for 3 hours in the Horton Plaza parking garage. There's a kiosk on the lower level of the mall where you self-validate your ticket.

Yes but make sure to validate before 9 pm. I forgot the other night before 9 pm and they charge $2 every 15 minutes! I had a big bill at the end of the night. I figured I could validate as long as I entered before 7 pm but not so. But the 3 free hours is a great deal.

I didn't know about that, but I suppose that makes sense if the mall closes at 9.

You can see San Diego car-free and reach all the major destinations, if you stay Downtown or in Old Town. Your original site doesn't work well.

You absolutely need a car. Before I moved here we visited for a 5 days and were SO happy to have rented a car. We've lived here for 8 years and my husband is a cop now. He even recommends renting a car. The one thing I do need to warn you about is how FAST people here drive! I'm from Boston and thought I had seen it all. Not true! And I've taken public transportation in Boston. I've never done it here. It's not as built up as other major cities. Maybe one day.....
