So when considering employment out of state, how important is it to have a local address for where you are applying? I am wondering how much employers focus solely on local residents.

Its imperative that you have a local address for the place your applying at. If you have an out of state address your resume will be quickly be passed over & put aside.

You never mentioned what you do exactly or what sort of job your looking for? You mentioned you "want to get a security clearance" so does that mean you don't already have a clearance? Can you give us a little background as it pertains to your current "career" & work experience etc. to better serve you?

Don't assume anyone is going to accept or transfer over your clearance, the gov doesn't even do it unless the receiving agency makes a formal request. Also companies will not cooperate in clearance transfers especially if you are going to work for a rival.
As far as I know, companies have no say in the matter. The issuing agency will decide whether to do a transfer or start over.

Companies regularly cooperate with clearance transfers. Go to DC. People transfer between companies pretty much every 2-3 years. It's routine. It's not the company that "transfers" the clearance anyways. The company doesn't hold the clearance, the granting agency does. And yes, the Government doesn't transfer the clearance unless there is a formal request. This formal request is routine and done regularly, as long as the requestor has a need to know and need for the clearance, which assuming he is getting a new job that requires and is requesting the transfer, he has.

I was in DC for two years and had problems with contractors, switching contracts and trying to hold onto the same employees, bringing them on with the gov, .... and lots of other problems. It just never went smoothly. I would imagine some agencies and companies security professionals are better than others. I have seen people have to go through another SSBI within a year just because they switched and the losing agency/company would not cooperate Many times we had to just hire in house because the granting process was just too much and too time consuming. Also, alot of people are under the assumption that they have a clearance because they have gone through a background check.

Is it active? Clearances get 'dropped' once you are no longer with a company or job. Then you have about two years to play with to find another job that requires that clearance.

I am in the defense industry.. I lived in CA until last year.. I was laid off in 2011 from Northrop Grumman and couldnt find a good job for almost a year in LA... So I moved to Waco Texas... Now I'm moving back to CA (chula vista).. taking a HUGE pay cut... the taxes and the fact that companies arent paying well in CA make a huge difference.. I have to agree that ALL companies in defense are on a hiring freeze...
