But, the fine is hefty and there is a website called " Cheaters" that anyone can turn your plate # in to CHP for a check. I know people it happened to.
So I'm not allowed to have out of state plates in Ca? Strange.

Not if you are a resident. Just about every State ( if not all) has the same laws. The State figures if you are using our Highways, you should help pay for them.
That being said...you will see many out-of-state plates....between vacationers and Military. Just don't get caught. And make sure your Ins card and license match addresses.

Only if you're military and/or attending school.

Correct.

I should have added...license, registration and Ins all match addresses.

That's right. If you get pulled over, and something doesn't match, your car may be impounded, unless you provide the officer with a logical explanation as to why everything isn't the same.

Oh wow! You guys are very informative! Much appreciated. I will definitely keep that in mind! I'm coming out in may to visit. I came last year in March so I'm a little familiar with the area. However in may id like to drive around and check out possible living areas. Any suggestions as to where I should look? For a single female?

Wait until you get a job offer. If you find a place to live in advance, you could have a very long commute to work.

Yea that's what I plan on doing. However, for the time being I will be looking for roommates so I guess I just wanted to know more or less of what areas I should avoid. But might be easier to ask that question closer to May when I actually have potential roommates lined up. Thanks.
