That all said, if I lived in Japan I wouldn't own a gun. If I lived in Alaska I'd own and carry. Neither one of those outlier environments relates to everyday life in San Diego.
There's no bears in San Diego? Jesus. Who knew?

. Well, in the zoo. Might be wise to consider carrying if you plan to enter their exhibt. Which is kinda how I feel about entering certain neighborhoods (where I have no business being).

I have always liked my arms, as well. Especially when they are carrying cash.

Would it bring the crime rate down?

Race was brought up at one point in this conversation. San Diego is a 6.7% Black. Anchorage,Alaska, is around 5.6% Black. Both are home to major military installations. Virginia Beach, at around 19-20% Black, has a major naval installation, like San Diego. Between these three cities, Virginia Beach is the safest(and the safest city in the nation). Anchorage has a violent crime rate more than 2 times San Diego's, and a violent crime rate around 6 times higher than Virginia Beach, despite having a Black population of 5.6%. Anchorage leads the nation in rape.

Why is San Diego safer than Anchorage? Why is Virginia Beach safer than San Diego?

A majority of crimes in Anchorage are native population on one another as with rape. There is very little crime in Anchorage which a working guy has to be concerned with. Here in San Diego most of the crime is not so confined. Freeway shooters, home invasions to absurd numbers here, TV broadcasters being shot in broad daylight and added to this the simply RABID drivers here. I feel less safe here even though the numbers don't bear it out....so what does that make me? Sensitive? The race thing could be debated forever and probably has been.

Additionally in Alaska as with other states with common sense, a person can legally carry a weapon. Home invasions are almost nonexistent and frequently crime is stopped by the carry laws. Vulnerability to crime is less (my sense) and despite people stating that gun possession only increases the chance of the gun being used against the owner, most places it ain't so. If we take away suicide, accidental gun use which leads to injury you have a criminal (armed) approached an unarmed citizen. Those stats of robbery kidnapping assault are not going to show up in your stats. Only homicides by gun. Additionally you don't really have the large critters here in SD which exist in neighborhoods in Anchorage. Bear and moose move freely throughout the city and the suburbs. Good idea to have access to a weapon.

My honest opinion is that personal safety is in the eye of the beholder and laws which restrict choice interfere with the rights to be secure. I don't plan to own a cow here in Cali (and they won't issue one anyway). But if I am traveling you'd best believe that I will have one because the truth is (and it really is the truth) there are MONSTERS out there who used to resemble people and they don't care about your your family or your lives. They only care about one thing. Does the person who I am going to rob, hurt or kill have a GUN?

You offered a plausible explanation with Anchorage. However, nothing has been given for Virginia Beach.

News flash: most monsters don't much care if you have a gun or not either. They're desperate people and a lot more vicious and coniving than you.

Most significant thing you pointed out in your post is: this isn't Alaska. So all that doesn't hardly apply, does it.

And yeah, Mariner, how about that Virgina Beach? But we've long ago covered that truth. Forget the racial profiling.
