Why is hvi g a nfl team such a priority? You really wanna waste $350 million on a billionaire t build a stadium that gets maybe 12 games a year ( reg season + pre season). If it's such a " good investment" why doesn't the league use their own billions to build it.

NYC lost TWO NFL teams and they seem to be doing all right.

I like Falconer as mayor but he's played the wrong cards on this issue. Now he has to go back to hoteliers with his tail between his legs

So the Chargers want to move downtown, into a hybrid NFL stadium and convention center. How are they — and taxpayers — going to pay for it?
Team officials aren’t talking publicly. Investment bankers, lawyers and political consultants are working to finish a detailed plan by late March, to allow plenty of time to gather signatures for a November ballot initiative.
Still, some clues have emerged over the last year or so. Surprisingly, financing might be the easy part, with San Diego politics raising the major obstacles.
Let’s start with money. JMI Realty, the Chargers development partner that previously built the Padres stadium, estimated last summer that it will cost roughly $1.7 billion to build a joint-use NFL stadium and convention center in the East Village, next to Petco Park and the new library. The Chargers haven’t said whether their final plan will cost more or less.
In rough terms, this breaks down to $600 million for the convention center and $1.1 billion for the stadium. By the way, the stadium figure includes paying off $29 million in city bonds for Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley, plus financing costs and some land acquisition.

Where do they expect to put another stadium downtown? All they're doing is whining that if they don't get a downtown stadium they'll leave. So let them leave.

The site would be the MTS bus yard just east of Petco Park. It's a tight squeeze and faces way more hurdles than Mission Valley would, and I think ultimately it's the Chargers saying "we want downtown" knowing what a long shot downtown will be, so that they can end up in LA where their team and brand would be worth much more than it is in SD.

If they want the MTS bus yard, that means that MTS will have to find a site to relocate the busses. Isn't that the site that was going to take 25 years to clean up?

I think they really want to leave, and are just "testing the waters" to see what happens.

Neither site would get the public's vote, so i just don't understand why the mayor would play or participate in the chargers political games.
This announcement was done solely to dirty up the mayor and the greedy hoteliers, and it looks like its working.
The Mayor f@^Kup by not offering both Downtown and Mission Valley as potential sites. It would have avoided all of this.
Comic Con has already said "if the Chargers move downtown they're outta here"
San Diego Comic-Con not on board with Chargers plans for new downtown stadium

Are the citizens of California paying for your home? Should they be paying for your place of business? No? If the taxpayers aren't paying to house your business, then there is no good reason -- none -- that taxpayers should be footing the bill for billionaires and their sports stadiums. It's an outrage perpetuated by a lazy, stupid citizenry who should demand an end to it.
Well stated. San Diego looks more attractive to me without an NFL team.
