Is it because the hike to the top is short and easy? Every time I go there, regardless of when, it's like a conveyor belt. I feel like I'm waiting in line at Space Mountain when I hike it.

Black Mountain, Iron Mountain, Mount Woodson, Elfin Forest Preserve Peak, and San Miguel Mountain (rest in peace) - are all much better hikes, with way less people. And most of them have better views at the top!

It's close. That's all I got Rather hike Tecalote. Where I hunt out further E it gets vertical fast.

I think it is more central and closer to most people, plus I think it is easy as you say, although I've never done Cowles.

Try hiking Mt El Cajon off Wildcat Canyon Rd. You will be almost alone on that trail.

Bring water though, lots of it. It is closed in August. This is probably the most grueling hike in San Diego County. Not much of a view until ~1.5 miles from the summit. It is mostly a dirt/gravel trail with little shade.

It's close and reasonably strenuous for most people. For a variation, go up the east side from Big Rock park in Santee.

El Cajon Mountain is too much of a but kicker for most folks.

Centrally located and easy enough trail to follow. Nice view at the top. Parking.

It is the highest hike in the city limits of SD if that means anything.

The PCT winds through some pretty rugged stuff if you don't want crowds.

And act like a local by calling it COAL'S mountain. That's the way the last name of the gentleman who the mountain is named for was pronounced. You will be constantly corrected or at least looked at a little sideways, but you will be right.
