(06-20) 12:35 PDT OAKLAND -- Hundreds of demonstrators, gathering at the Port of Oakland before dawn, prevented the unloading of an Israeli cargo ship.

The demonstrators, demanding an end to Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip, picketed at Berth 58, where a ship from Israel's Zim shipping line is scheduled to dock later today. The day shift of longshoremen agreed not to cross the picket line.

Neat thing, in my opinion. Peaceful and thoughtful demonstrations really are a wonderful thing (as opposed to the Mehserle/Grant Riots). Hopefully others will see that the way you force change isn't through random and meaningless violence but through smart, thoughtful planning. Nice to see Oakland in the national news, too.

Arresting 700 people sounds like a logistical nightmare.

I'm sure the dock workers enjoyed a day off.

I agree that the action against the Israeli ship was well-conducted irregardless of the issue. Recently there have been anti-Arizona law demonstrations in LA area where the protesters sit in the middle of super-busy blvd's refusing to move. It takes the police hours to clear the street and the traffic jams have been horrendous. I believe the cause is good but not the method of protest.

True! LOL!

Well, weather you agree with the protesters or not, at least it was peaceful and not destructive.

No riots. A simple healthy, productive protest. Beautiful, really.

You're so anti-Oakland you can't even praise thoughtful, non-violence if it occurs within Oakland's borders.

Go back to reading The Orange County Register. I'm sure there's a gaggle of interesting tidbits in there.

Oh, look, I knew it:

There were 5 garage sales in Mission Viejo this weekend! Did you go to them all?!

Since Zim is a privately owned company, I'm not sure what 'message' is being sent here?
