First things first: SF Detractors belong here: //www.city-data.com/forum/san-f...francisco.html

Now...

800,000+ people live in SF- by choice. So many visit from around the world. So many visit from around the rest of the SFBA (me).

Why?

I'll start:
  1. Restaurants: world cuisine and fresh seafood; if you like to eat more than just "American" food, you like SF
  2. Parades/Festivals/Concerts/etc.: there's always something happening in SF
  3. Distinct Neighborhoods: North Beach, Little Italy, Chinatown, the Financial District, the Mission, The Haight, each with its own character
  4. Tolerant, Cosmopolitan Character: this strongly makes SF what it is and is why it was chosen by the gay community
  5. Open-minded, Free-Thinking Culture: be a freak, be a square, be a hippy, be a hipster, be a douchebag. Whatever. It's SF. It's cool.
  6. Artistic Vibrance and Art-Appreciating Culture: visual, performing, music.. this is one of the meccas of the west coast
  7. Shopping: boutiques, haberdasheries, as well as all the major brands and chains
  8. Weather: refreshingly foggy and cool in the summer, moderately cold in the winter; moderate weather which is pleasant year-round
  9. Proximity to Other Cities and Natural Attractions: Oakland, Berkeley, Marin County, San Jose, Santa Cruz, Monterey & Carmel, as well as the redwood forests and beaches of the mountains north and south of the city
  10. Wealth of Employment and Education Opportunities: many come to the SFBA for this alone
This is a short list.. Expound on these points and add new ones.

I found this to be the worst part. In the summer around July 4, it is miserably cold. Who wants to spen their July in the cold? Its anything but refreshing.

Although I don't fit in any of the above category, this is what set this city apart from other cities. It's refreshing to see all kinds of people, maybe except douchbags. I usually wait at the Caltrain station for the company bus and I can count up to 5 kinds of vehicles (not cars) that people get to work after getting off the Caltrains: rollerblades, skateboards, foldup bikes (cool)/bikes, razor scooters and of course their own two feet. I see elder women riding razor scooters and I thought that's cooool.

I loved living in SF! Hands down one of the most uniquely beautiful places in the US. My wife and I plan on moving back at some point, when the economy picks back up.

I am one of those that loved the BayArea's micro climates.

Or just drive down the Peninsula to Redwood City and you'll get a +15 deg upward shift.

Only some online freaks claim to like SF weather. In real life, nobody does! This is Sept and supposedly its the Indian summers. The party line is that sept-oct are warm and sunny here. Well first two weeks of Sept is just as cold and foggy as July/August.

SF is unique among US cities in the sense that its probably the only place where the weather sucks all year long.
