Question still applies. How does it help the 20% of people under the poverty line in Oakland?

redevelopment is happening in oakland. new residents in the city's urban core.

by bringing in more customers for retailors who then hire the local workforce resulting in jobs for the unemployed.
this business activity results in a larger tax base to fund programs to help the poor

every month 1 or 2 NATIONAL publications write articles about the positive things happening in oakland
here are some of the most recent .
it's not just the people who live in oakland saying this but national publications OVEr AND OVER AGAIN,
new york magazine 9/24

wall street journal 9/16

That's great. But do you have proof about how meaningful the contributions to the cities coffers are? Where are the raw numbers?

Also some say Oakland's problem isn't even job creation (even though it's a problem), the biggest problem could be years of entrenched crime:

While I lived in the Outer Richmond District Albertsons closed 3 stores, Safeway 2 and several others went under at the same time Trader Joes prospered. WALMART will never pay $10 an hour and provide Health Insurance for all which is the legal requirement to open any business in the City of San Francisco. Where I lived most people walked or took public transportation so they picked up no more than they could carry home on foot. It was cheaper to pick up take out than cook. My wife and I laughed about not needing a car or a refrigerator. The Super Market doesn't make it there

Cheaper/ healthier foods. The city gets the revenue from the place.

Target in North Oakland- 1 of 2 Bay Area Target stores expected to open in 2011. Oakland and Emeryville will share the revenue the center generates. Will create 200-250 jobs for the area

Even Oakland's budget restaurants are superior to what people in Santa Ana or Anaheim consider "good". Hell the taco trucks in Oakland make national news. You dont understand because you live in a culinary wasteland.

I also don't understand because, unlike you, I don't eat food that is served out of a truck.

I like to live a little dangerously. It comes from living/traveling to places outside of the US. Enjoy your PF Chang's.
