Kind of hard to do when this is the trend. Not to mention people being forced to invest in the craptastic stock market instead of getting a guaranteed pension. And then those who are lucky enough to still get a pension risk getting told right before they retire that the money is all gone because it was raided to pay for CEO bonuses:

I realize it's hard for some, making $50K and under. This board seems populated mostly by college graduates and the national average income for college graduates is about $115K. You should be able to save something out of that.

NO ONE is forced to invest in the stock market. By law, all 401(k) plans must have bond market and money market options as well as stock funds.
