That still seems to be quite a bit out of my budget. :/ Is there anything in a "pretty safe" Oakland neighborhood for closer to the $600 range without having to have a roommate?

600? No, you can rent a room for that price though.

Not in the Bay Area. Decent neighborhood studios in Oakland are at least $750.

Maybe you want to try Sacramento. That might be possible over there. But you'd need a car.

Nope. Get a room in a decent-sized place with decent people. Saves money, affords luxuries of home, and introduces you to people who know the area.

$600 a month with a roommate could easily put you in a decent part of Oakland

It always amuses me when people want to move to a dense urban place like the Bay Area with no money, yet want to live by themselves.

Public transit is also not cheap in the Bay Area. To and from SF from Oakland via BART is about $7.00. I believe AC Transit (bus) is more. When making a budget to live here, factor in high transportation cost.

Single rides for the Transbay bus are $4, but if you get the unlimited transbay bus pas, I think it is $160 a month for unlimited local and transbay. There is no such pass for BART.

It's not that I'm AGAINST roommates. It's just that I'd rather room with a young girl that likes to be topless all the time. But since that isn't an everyday option found in the "Roommates Wanted" section, I'm kinda stuck living alone. Actually, I will only room with someone if I actually know and trust the person. Unless the above option becomes a reality. Then I'll take what I can get. LOL.

You are correct. I'm trying to cover all of my options in order to best choose where I'm going to move. I would LOVE to move to NYC or SF, but by posting this question on both forums, I can pretty well rule them out. I want to make the best decision for my future, and a lot of different cities have always interested me - It's just a matter of, what makes the most sense from a financial aspect. I still need to start a thread for Philadelphia and Minneapolis as well though, since both of those interest me too. I really don't know if anything will top Cleveland though as far as giving me a fighting chance on $13k. BTW - Good observation though.
