In my building the hallways have the original 1940's-ish vinyl type tile, which has an asbestos backing. If it's ever torn up, the tenants will probably have to evacuate. In the meantime, it's safe, but we have to let them know about it.

The money you carry in your pocket, specifically nickels, can cause cancer too. Almost everything can cause cancer.

The deal with cancers is simple, the medical industry is more concerned with finding solutions to symptoms than actual cures. That way you can be sold some form of medication for the rest of your life.

You should come spend some time at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center here in Houston before you make flippant, content-less comments like that.

Actually, I WOULD be concerned about cancer. It is not something you want in your life. We live in a senior retirement community, and my next door neighbor has breast cancer, the gal across the street has uterine cancer that is in remission, a good friend's husband one street over is fighting lung cancer (and losing), and my wife just got back from helping her 38 year old niece get through chemo due to lymph cancer that has a very poor prognosis. Cancer is a ticking time bomb, and what you are exposed to today may not show up for decades, but sooner or later it will if you are foolish or just have bad genes.

But realistically, the sign probably relates to asbestos fibers in the ceiling tiles (popcorn itself is just a gooey glop that is sprayed over the asbestos tiles), floor tiles, and possibly lead based paint on the walls. Don't eat any chipped paint (have to be careful if you have kiddies or pets), and leave the ceiling alone. I'd put a good filter on your water faucet too, and be careful of the tile/carpet if it looks suspect. Otherwise all is probably fine.

Look at the newer looking apartments if you don't want an apartment with asbestos.
do you think can I find new studio apartments in the SF less about 2000?

I don't see why not, my friend found one for around $1500. Check out Padmapper to see what's available.

Those cancer warning signs were one of the first things that got my attention when I moved here back in 2011. Having come from Iowa. I don't think I have seen a public building here with out one of those signs. Which I pretty much take with a grain of salt. Given its pretty much physically impossible to construct a building with out at least some toxic materiel.
