As others have said, it has snowed, but it's rare and the accumulation on those events has been small. It's surrounded by water on 3 sides, which keeps it warmer in winter, especially at night.

I don't know when the last time it snowed in SFO was, if ever, but north of the city, Marin Co. has had a little in more recent years and so has So. CA. The last big snow I remember in SoCa (Los Angeles) was either 1948 or 49, not 45. And they have had flurries a few times since.

I lived in Marin County for 23 years, and I remember a small snow storm in 1988, I believe. There was no accumulation, as it was gone by noon, but Mt Tam was actually white that morning.

Here are some pictures from 1976. I was a kid living in Berkeley at the time. I remember seeing it snow while the flakes were in the air but where I was, nothing stuck.

Snow in the Bay Area is rare and in the city of San Francisco it is exceedingly rare.

I remember one particularly frigid Xmas season in Berkeley, with the snow lasting about a week. But in general, Berkeley used to get a lot colder than it does now in winter. I used to need layers of wool for the 45 degree daytime temps in Dec./Jan., and the below freezing nighttime temps. Snow happened every 5 years, pretty much like clockwork. Considering the last snowfall was in 2011, we'll be due for another one in 2016. Theoretically.

From my years in San Francisco, I think that I saw snow once, but as others are saying, it was just a few flurries, but there wasn't any accumulation, since the ground was already pretty soaked. I wished that it snowed more, as it is beautiful. I'm pretty sure that snow is a lot more common in Florida than it is in the bay area. That actually surprised me, since Florida is a peninsula as well.
